Comments: I left Fiji in 1973 after working a few years as a ticketing officer in Qantas in Suva. Went to the Mediterranean - mainly lived in Greece and worked on the cruise ships taking pilgrims to Israel,
Lebanon, Egypt, Turkey, Greek islands and Cyprus (following St Paul's footsteps) the short version is that I fell in love with
Israel and ended up marrying a kibbutznik in 1978, we left the kibbutz to start up a moshav (a farming community) on the Golan Heights,
starting from scratch moving stones, burning thistles and planting trees - had 4 children and grew lots of onions and artichokes, moved on to cotton-pickers and farm machinery and now the farm is a dairy farm + protea for export to
Holland. I left Dec 2002 to come to NZ (all the family was here) as life in Israel was much too stressful - only husband didn't want to leave - so we decided that I try two years here and see how it goes - I brought the two younger children (Keren now 16 and Jordan now 14) and thought that at least they will learn English and get to know my family. well the big kids followed, having finished the army and I have just fallen in love with this wonderful country - the freedom and the rain! Husband Nachum, who came to visit twice but still didnt want to leave Israel, so we eventually decided to separate and got a divorce last year.
At the moment Jordan and Ofer (big son now 24) are over in Israel visiting - Ofer went back for a year to say goodbye to all his friends, and wants to come back to NZ or Aussie to live. Jordan started to miss his dad and friends, so has gone back for as long as he wants - we talk every second day. So it is just daughter Hila (25) and Keren and me here now - Hila and I bought a house and we have good fun planning all our renovations (just minor stuff) and decorating together. Hila is a dental assistant - making good money - she loves her job, - also works in surgery at the hospital. Ofer is an aircraft mechanic (was in charge of F16's in the
air force) but worked here doing deliveries for "LiquourKing"!
I am still in travel - working in the small retail department of Adventure
World - great
company - I have just come back from Africa on a familiarisation trip
(Fly-in Safari in Botswana) - so its a good life.
UPDATE
20.8.07
I
left all my old photos in Israel so have nothing so send from the old Fiji
life, but thought I would send this updated photo taken just before Keren
(now 18) left to join the army in Israel (I have just talked to her as she
has got on the bus to the Conscription Compound, if that is what it is
called in English, leaving from Tiberias to Tel Aviv, today 20th August). So
now I have the two boys left here and my two daughters recently left to live
in Israel for a while - topsy turvy every year. Still playing tug-of-war
with my ex-husband - each trying to persuade the other to come to respective
countries. It is good, though, that someone is in each country, so the
children feel comfortable country-hopping. Big phone bills and travel
expenses :-).Still in Adventure World and get to travel (just come back from
Alaska, but still haven't made it to Fiji) I am looking forward to seeing
Doug Crago and family when he visits here next month.Sister Julie (50) is
still in Fiji living the good life in Nadi - two daughters engaged so big
wedding plans... Brother Barry (57) here in Auckland expecting first
grandchild in October - exciting business!Big Sister Raewyn (59) just left
Israel where she has been living the last 9 years, and has moved to
Australia to live - she will come to visit NZ at the end of the month so it
will be great to catch up.

We left Fiji in September 1966 intending to return home to Brisbane but
stopped off in New Zealand and stayed. I attended Takapuna Grammar School in
Auckland. Same crest and motto as Suva Grammar so it seemed a little like
home though colder! After school I went to the University of Auckland
studying Chemistry and Geology. After varsity I went to the Auckland College
of Education graduating in 1976 and have been teaching ever since. Currently
I am principal at Otorohanga College a small rural seconday school in the
Central North Island near the Waitomo Caves.
I have been heavily involved in sport since coming to NZ both playing and
coaching. I have coached representative rugby up to Regional U-19 level and
have served terms on the NZ Rugby Union and NZ Schools. I am still involved
at national level but the bones are getting a little old for daily coaching. Anne and I have a small 1 hectare lifestyle block on the side of Mt
Pirongia where we have built a little wharenui for ourselves. We travel
extensively in the holidays and thoroughly enjoy life.
My sister, Moira, who was three years behind is also in NZ. Her
hairdresser is Tom Smith and she ran into both Judy and Buggy during her
last appointment. I have been back to Fiji several times since 1966 and always have had a
soft spot in my heart for it.

Comments:
I was Jenny Andrews back then. I was born
in Suva in 1956 and my last year at Suva Grammar would have been 1978 when I
was in form 1 and in Mr Whippy’s class. Before that I was at Vieuto Primary
and went there from Suva Primary. We lived at 24 Narian Place, Tamavua and
my Mum,Christine, was Assistant Public Trustee in Government. She was a
single mum which in those days was pretty rare I think, but we had a pretty
good existence. I remember Julie Agar (used to go to her house up in
Princess Road a lot) and Neil Marsh, Robert Murray, Nick Casey, Zia Sherani
as the kids who lived in our neighbourhood. After Form 1, I did a year at
Levuka Convent (shock to the system that was after the free and easy
lifestyle in Suva) and then on to boarding school in Auckland. After school
I completed a secretarial course and worked at Munro Leys for about 18
months before gravitating back to Auckland. Have been based here in
Auckland ever since.

--------------------------------
A bit of biography:
I arrived in Fiji in early
1961 when Suva Grammar was one year old. My parents, Peter & Barbara
Beveridge, both taught there & we lived in the staff house closest to the
woodwork block - there were only four houses in the area then, with kasava
gardens & scrub up behind. The staff 'maisonettes' on the ridge were
built soon after & then the whole area was developed with government
housing, all in the same concrete block style. I have three younger
brothers: John, Martin, & Paul who was born in Fiji.
I went to the old Suva Primary
in town for a year, then Laucala Bay Primary the next year when it first
opened to general public. 1963 I arrived in Std 3A at Suva Grammar (Miss
Blythe?). My classes & teachers were: Std 4A - Miss McAdam, Form 1A - Mr
Anderson, Form 2A - Mr Gibson, Form 3A, Form 4A, Form 5 & 2 years in Form
6 with Mr Huddleston ( Lilian Appleby & I were the only girls in that
class). I was a prefect for the last couple of years (1970 & 71) & taught
the SGS choir for the Schools' Music Festival after Mr Simons left. David
Bennett took care of our school item for the concert, arranging
'Scarborough Fair' & 'The Skye Boat Song' for us to sing in harmony.
My family lived in Veiuto for
7 years before moving to Laucala Bay when USP first opened & my father
became the Dean of Preliminary Studies. There we lived in the house on
the corner of Laucala Bay Rd at the university main gate - it was once the
airforce doctor's residence - a nice wooden house with a big veranda &
mosquito screens! Helen Aikman, whose father was the Vice-Chancellor,
lived next door, & Jackie Smith also lived on campus. We kept our family
boat 'Zoea' (a half-cabin launch) down next to the old Sunderland hangar,
inside the breakwater, & went across to Nukulau most weekends. I remember
it took longer to get the boat in the water than to get across to the
island!
In January 1972 I left Fiji to
go to Teachers' College in Christchurch. Part-way through my training, I
took a change of direction & went to work for EMI Records in their Colombo
St, Christchurch shop which was the biggest-selling record outlet in NZ in
the mid-70's. I was very involved with the folk music scene in
Christchurch & also got to hear (& meet) a great variety of international
musicians through EMI - rock, pop, classical, folk & jazz. 1976 saw me
heading north to live in Auckland & I met my husband Brian there. We got
married in 1979, had twin daughters, Diana & Vanessa, in 1981 & moved a
little further north of Auckland to Hibiscus Coast when the girls were 2
1/2.
Brian is a artist producing
original oils, limited edition prints & bronze sculpture. I now work with
him full-time, mostly in the area of marketing but also researching for
new projects, framing, keeping all the records of the various editions, &
so on. We have collectors all over New Zealand, plus some in Australia,
Fiji & the U.S, and get to meet lots of good people. (The pieces that went
to Fiji were all part of Brian's gamefishing series - see
www.brianmoore.co.nz
.)
In 1992 I started a folk music
club at our house, which conveniently had a huge lounge. The East Coast
Folk Club ran very successfully there for 9 years, with monthly guest
artists and audiences of up to 80 crammed in to listen & perform. After
the house sold & we moved to a smaller cottage in the country, the club
continued in an old hall, run by musician friend, & it's still going well
15 years on. And I'm still singing - mostly in a trio called 'Threepenny
Bit'. We do a variety of English/Irish/Scottish traditional folk songs, a
bit of Renaissance music, and some contemporary NZ/Australian/American
material as well - lots of close harmony work. We sang this year (2007)
as part of the opening night concert at the big Auckland Folk Festival.
I would love to hear from old
Suva Grammar friends

I come from a family of 5 - brothers Quentin
&Graham who are both in Brisbane and will fill in their DOB, my sisters Irene (Joyce as we call her) who is in New Zealand, Jacqueline (the youngest) who is still in Fiji and myself Heather (born
1953) who is currently in Hong Kong. Mum (Frances) deceased 2001 and Dad (Mickey Boulton) will be 90 this year 2006 born 1916 .Dad did many things but had Leading Light Poultry Farm (chicken farm) at Quaia, Lami where we grew up. We all attended Suva Grammar School.
I met Bill Baillie (my husband) in Fiji while we were both working at Pacific Harbour Deuba. He is Scottish and worked in Fiji for 3years from 1973 to 1976. We married in England (Morden) which is near Wimbledon, on September 11th 1976, where we lived for a few months. We have our home in Surrey England and we have two boys. Stuart who was born on Charles and Diana’s wedding day 29 July 81 who is now 24 and Craig who is 20 born on 23rd October 1985. Both our boys are back in England. Stuart is working in London and Craig is at Derby University.
After leaving school I worked as a trainee hairdresser in Fiji at Michelle’s Salon in Cumming Street. I also worked at the Tradewinds Hotel in the salon with Phyllis Raymond then I went to Australia for 9months. I then returned to Fiji and joined Stinson’s and they opened 2 shops at the new Pacific Harbour Hotel. Verna (Thomas) Griffiths and Shanti (Shankiran) Mills were the other 2 girls I worked and lived with at Pacific Harbour. We all met our husbands there and they both moved to Australia and I ventured further to England. Before leaving Fiji I joined Avis at Pacific Harbour after Robert Miller changed careers, my boss then was Carl Bay.
Bill and I lived in Muscat, Oman for 3 years, where I started my family. Back to UK for a number of years, and then we moved to Hong Kong in 1999. At present I work in a Kindergarten teaching Japanese children aged between 2 and 4. Don’t know where I get my patience from, must be my Mother, as she ran a Kindy in Fiji for a number of years. Bill is an Electrical Estimator, working for Balfour Beatty/Gammon. That is a summary of my 52years and this year Bill & I celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary on that ill-fated day, September 11th.
Love Heather (aka "kutz" as I was later known, spelt in Fijian cutu, as I could never keep still like the little bug!!) Attached is a photo of my family. Left to right Craig, Stuart, Bill & myself taken at Happy Valley Race Course in Hong Kong, Christmas 2years ago.

Hi,
it's Ken Corbitt here,
You may
remember me from Suva Grammar in 1964-65. I was in Cane-Happy Cater's class
in 1964, and Cane-Powerhouse Graeme Eden's in 1965. I'm not surprised that
Mr Eden went on to coach the All Blacks – the pain from his cane lasted for
hours.
Anyway,
I returned to Australia in 1966, left school at Junior Certificate to work
in an advertising agency, Hertz Walpole. Returned to college to matriculate
in 1970, studied drama at Uni of NSW for two semesters, failed an audition
to NIDA (National Institute of Dramataic Art), dropped out and went to
Cairns to discover myself and the Australian tropics (I missed Fiji maybe).
Met and fell in love with Sharon; moved back to Sydney, where we were
married in 1973. Worked in advertising, then at TCN-9 TV station at the
introduction of colour (1973-75). Sacked by Kerry Packer for being a union
delegate that helped behind-the-scenes workers win a 25% pay increase.
Returned to Cairns in 1975, began career as radio announcer at 4CA Cairns.
Opened record store in 1979, pushed out of business by Chandlers in 1981.
Marriage broke down only 18 months after birth of first daughter, Carmen.
Moved
to Dubbo, NSW in search of work in radio, but ended up in journalism (I used
to write the class notes for 3A and one of my poems was published in the
Suva Grammar school magazine, so it made sense I ended up writing I guess).
After
experiencing one summer of 45 degrees and a winter of -4 in Dubbo, I moved
as a journalist to Sunshine Coast, Queensland in 1983. Met Linda who already
had three kids, we had Danielle together and we moved to Noosa, where my
daughter and ex still live. Worked as a journalist, radio journalist and
public relations consultant for 15 years.
Linda
and I separated in 1992, but I assumed care for Danielle and was a single
Dad for 7 of the next 10 years. Went back to uni. in 1997-2001 and became a
Bachelor of Social Science (Community Work). Also tutored in a media subject
while at University of the Sunshine Coast. Always a left-winger, I became
vice-president of the student union and resigned in front of the media a
year later when I found the student union had been neutered.
I am
most of the way through an Education degree as well, but am currently on a
Leave of Absence while I care for my mother, who has stomach cancer. My
brother Peter died in my arms on Christmas Day, 2004, also of cancer, so
I've been living back in northern NSW since then. My brother was building a
small house on 13 acres near the Border Ranges and Mount Warning. The
property is surrounded by national parks and state forests – I can see the
Queensland border from my verandah.
The
house has solar power, solar hot water and is not quite finished.
Want to
know of some of the crazy things I've got up to in the past 41 years? You
probably wouldn't believe the half of it....let's just say Ken has lived
life as it came..and it wasn't all beer and skittles. I am about to write my
first book on my travels and experiences, so stay tuned, folks...
I would
love to contact some of my former classmates from Suva Grammar. If you email
me at
kcorbitt@bigpond.com I promise a swift reply

My family and I left Fiji at the end of 1967 after I had finished Form 3 (Mrs Huddlestone was our class teacher). My mother had died a couple of months earlier (cancer) and after some soul-searching, Dad thought it best if we returned to Australia, eventually back to Adelaide, where I and my sister Heather were born.
After school I went into building, eventually going out on my own. However in 1986/’87 went through a bit of a sea-change and settled into a career in marketing, where I found that I had more control of my own destiny.
Kathy and I married in 1975 and recently celebrated our 30th. We have 3 children: Jason (just turned 29), Sian (27) and Jordan (22). Jordan is the only one officially still at home, although Jason is still single and keeps on turning up every now and then! Sian and her husband Shane are currently living and working in London, doing the ‘Continental Experience’ thing, and expect to stay over there for a year or two. The rest of us live in Adelaide, although Jason’s music takes him around Australia from time to time (- just returned from a northern tour).

I left Fiji
in January 1971. I had failed my U.E. miserably and Mum and Dad were moving
to Western Samoa so I came back to Sydney and started a part time Tech
course for laboratory technicians and worked at University of Sydney as a
lab technician in various medical research areas. I travelled a bit in
Australia and overseas and worked in other laboratory jobs, but usually
found my way back to University of Sydney.
I married in 1984 had a son, Miles, in 1990 and lived happily in Sydney. My
husband Bill got a job in Orange NSW in 1992 so we moved here.
A country life is good although there weren't many employment opportunities
for me here. I worked in Pathology practices in town part time. Orange is
growing rapidly and 4 years ago the University of Sydney took over the
university Campus here and I was offered the Laboratory Managers position
for the new laboratories.
I separated from my husband 2 years ago and I am still living in Orange with
Miles (now 16) and am enjoying the benefits of country life. I have a strong
interest in music and play tuba with our community symphony orchestra. This
provides mental stimulation and social circle.
We should have a reunion in Fiji sometime soon. It would be great to see
everyone. Love to see any of you if you are visiting Orange NSW. I'll show
you some wonderful local wine, food and song!
Thanks again Donna. I'll send a photo when I get a suitable one.

My parents
are Robert (Bob) Dods (living in Savusavu) and Ida Dods (Browne) (living in
Deuba) and I have a younger sister, Colette Samson, who lives in Nadi with
her family. I was born in Suva (1955) and family connections include (to
name a few) the Smiths, Browns, Brownes, Hawksleys, Leppers, Barracks, and
Whippys. However, the convoluted family connections I now have in France,
Tunisia, and Scicily make our Fiji Family Tree look like a shrub in
comparison!
I am married
to Karim and we have one son Kevin Sinclair Dougha (14.09.93) I grew up in
Suva and traveled with my parents whilst being tutored by Dad. I started
school at Suva Primary and then went to Laucala Bay Primary School and on to
Suva Grammar, on and off until 6th Form. My father worked with the Lands
Department before moving into District Administration in 1968, which is when
the family moved to Rakiraki. I schooled there for a year before returning
to SGS, boarding with Dad´s sister, Jean Brown, in Lami, and with other
family - siblings, Vernan, Lionel and Joyce Hawksley, in Marou Rd, next to
our own Suva home. When my father was posted to the Northern Division, I
attended Labasa College (1970/1972) and went to school in Sydney(1971),
before returning to SGS for the 6th Form (1973).
I paddled
through a year at USP, and worked during holidays at various Coral Coast
hotels paving the way for my later work within the Fiji Tourism industry.
After some overseas traveling and various projects, I finally settled into
work at Pacific Harbour in 1976. I lived there for several years, but in
between spent several months in Auckland, and later on lived in Brisbane for
a while. During my spell at Pacific Harbour (the resort´s halcyon days!) I
started as an Admin Assistant and later managed the 180 Villas, Resort
Customer Services and Public Relations. I finally moved back to Suva in 1986
to work in Advertising/PR and then took up an opportunity to work at
Sheraton Fiji in Nadi for a couple of years. I had just returned to live in
Suva to manage a PR/Advertising/Publishing company, when I met my husband
during an "overseas break", in Levuka. My son , Kevin, was born in Suva in
September 1993 and he was 3 months old when we moved to Dubai/Sharjah for a
brief span. I then hopped it back to Suva for a year (to recover!) before
joining Karim in Spain early in 1996. Kevin and I go "home" to Fiji for
about 10 weeks a year during the European summer school holidays and spent
nearly a year there on our last trip back, in 2004/2005.
Karim has a
fish export business and we live 10 minutes drive away from Vigo City (a`major
European seafood port, in North West Spain) and 15 mintues from Portugal.
These days, I do our office work, give English Conversation Classes, and
still have time to tackle the garden and housework, pursue my various
interests such as painting and swimming, and to be "The Beck´ham Call Girl "
for the river of pre-teen "futbol" fanatics flowing through our house.

Comments: I left Suva Grammar School at the end of 1968 and
trained to be a nurse at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Camperdown in Sydney.
At the age of 21 years I had finished my
nursing qualifications and was working at the Accident and Emergency Department
Blacktown District Hospital. I married David Clements and we had a daughter
Belinda Jayne. Belinda is now 33 years old, married with 2 young daughters of
her own, Emma and Hailey. And I love being a grandmother!!!!. Belinda and her husband Jeff live in
Patersons Lake Melbourne.
I moved to Adelaide in 1975 after my
first marriage failed and worked at Daw’s Park Repatriation Hospital, Ashford
Community Hospital and then as a District Nurse along the Anzac Highway area. I
also attended Flinders University. I married Lindsay Christie in 1978 and
we had a son Marcus in 1986. We moved from Adelaide to Wangaratta in Victoria
where Lindsay worked as Vineyard Manager for Brown Brothers Winery and I worked
as the Director of Nursing - Rangeview Aged Care Facility.
I moved to Melbourne in 1990 (and will
never move from here) as I was on my own again. I worked as the Director of
Nursing Kinkora Court, Hawthorn, and then Rosanna Views until 2001. I worked
hard as a single parent and sent Marcus to Trinity Grammar School. I now work as
a consultant in Aged Care (current) but for the last year I have also worked
full time as the clinical coordinator for undergraduate nurses, Victoria
University. I coordinate 600 + student nurses and set up their clinical
rotations in all hospitals and other health services in Melbourne.
I am now in a very loving relationship
with Richard Edwards. Richard has his own company in the computer industry and
he leaves on business to go to China on Monday. My son, Marcus, is now 19
years old and starts his Bachelor of Biomedical Science at James Cook University
Townsville on Monday. He will be living on campus at John Flynn College. My Mum and two brothers, Stuart and
Robert live in Rockhampton Queensland. My father sadly passed away in his sleep
2 years ago. I have a valued and strong friendship (since school days)
with Maryann Drysdale (Aidney) and her husband John.
I have continued to study and am
currently doing post graduate studies in Education. I have been involved in
community services in many capacities. I can’t believe how time flies. I turn 54
next Wednesday. Really looking forward to keeping in contact with many of
the Suva Grammar gang and hope to see you all soon at a reunion.

Born in Sydney on 18th August
1955 and lived there for the first couple of years. Then moved out to a
little town in the country called Kandos, where Dad worked in the cement
factory. His company was starting up a new operation in Fiji and asked for
volunteers to get the factory up and running. He put his hand up for the job
and this was for a 2-year contract. We left Kandos in 1962 and moved to Suva
when I was 7 years old. Went to Suva Primary then on to SGS.
We left Suva in the middle of
1971 and moved back to Australia down to Adelaide, as we had family there.
After doing another one and half years of school I left to join the Royal
Australian Navy in January 1973. I did 10 years doing marine engineering. I
mainly served on the ship HMAS Torrens in that time. I received my fitter
and machinist ticket and rose up to the rank of Petty Officer.
In 1983, after getting out of
the navy I moved to Rockhampton in Queensland following my parents who had
left Adelaide 6 months before, seeking warmer weather. This was with my wife
Katrina who I met in Sydney during my navy days. I then started a totally
new career in retail, selling fishing tackle and scuba diving equipment.
Just before getting out of the navy I had a couple of friends who took me
diving off Sydney, which satisfied a curiosity that had haunted me from my
Fiji days. Then in 1985 I followed that passion and became a PADI diving
instructor and have been teaching ever since. In 1987 I went diving full
time and started up my own business called Capricorn Reef Diving which is
still going strong to this day.
Had a son James in May 1992.
My marriage did not work out, so got divorced in 1994. In June 2000 I got
married again to my wife Birgit who is a school teacher. It looks like that
just for something different I went back to my father’s roots being a German
himself: I then married a full blooded German. Since then we have had a
beautiful little girl, Inga, in July 2003. My mum is still alive and living
here in Rocky. Dad passed away in January 2004, he went peacefully in his
sleep one night, what a nice way to go. Mandy lives in Melbourne and my
brother Stuart is also here in Rocky.

with Burns Philip Motor Division most of the time. Both have passed on to
another paradise now.Older brother Bob has lived in the UK since leaving
Fiji and presently lives in Arbroath Scotland. In Suva we stayed in the
government quarters in The Domain and Veiutu.I went to Suva Grammar through
to 4th form and was then packed off to New Plymouth Boys High in
NZ in 1971 for 5th & 6th.
Joined The Bank of New
South Wales (now Westpac) after leaving school in 1973 and stayed with them
until 1995 – mostly in Auckland but also a short stint up in PNG.Have been
in the Real Estate Industry ever since then – presently the Property Manager
for Barfoot & Thompson, Blockhouse Bay, Auckland .
In between all that I
married a lovely Kiwi girl, Pam in 1983 and we have two kids – Rachael 23 –
an English Teacher at a local Secondary School and Andrew 21 – works for a
printing company in the city.
I have such great
memories of my years in Fiji and all the fantastic friends I met while
there. - It certainly was a special time and place.
I was back there for the
first time in 30 years in October 2006 and yes it has changed like
everything does, but perhaps not as much as I would have expected after such
a long time and with a few coups thrown in. Its still a great place.

My family consists of Allen (Born 1943), Brian (Born 1945),
Coleen (Born 1949), myself born 1953) and our parents Toby (deceased 2000)
and Yvonne /Von (aged 84). Dad worked for the Lands Dept in Suva. We went to
Fiji in 1955 when I was 2 years old, and left Fiji in Oct 1968. From there
we went to Lismore, NSW where I completed 4th Form. At the end of 1969 we
went to Brisbane where I started my first job with the Qld Govt in the
Survey Office as a drafting aid. This is where I met my first husband Greg .
I then went from there to TAA as an air hostess until we married in 1974.
After this I toured Australia with my husband who was an entertainer with a
show band called Wickety Wak. It was after 3 years of marriage that I had my
elder son Bradley in 1978 but split with Greg just before Brad’s birth.
I
was single for a couple of years in which time I met Denis my current
husband. We went our separate ways after a while and I then went on to meet
Barry (Nick) my second husband who I married in 1983. We were together for
15 years and in this time I had my second son Nicholas, born in 1985. Barry
was a builder / social rodeo bull rider and I kept his business accounts
along with working for my sister Coleen & her then husband at their
locksmith shop in Beenleigh as the shop manager. Barry and I divorced in
1996 and I married Denis the following year after running into him again 15
years since we had first met. In the first few years of our marriage I
managed the office for Denis’ business of Private Investigations (he is an
ex Police Officer).
We enjoy recreational boating / cruising on our
week-ends on the Brisbane and Gold Coast waterways. I currently work in the
City four days a week as a skip tracer (I locate people for different
reasons, mainly to do with car accidents, or court cases). My older son Brad
is 27 yrs old and single and is with the Qld Police. My second son Nicholas
is 21 yrs old, single, and working with a construction business. Denis has 2 boys
and 2 girls so we have 6 kids between us aging from 21 to 31. Denis has 3
grand kids of his own but technically I am not really a Grand Mother as yet.
Mum lives on Bribie Island, Allen in the Blue Mtns (NSW), Brian is in
Ballina and Coleen is in Brisbane.

What a wonderful surprise it was to receive

I feel embarrassed to remember inspecting

I hope you can keep up the good work.

I
have just been sent a link to your website which I have found
interesting. I was a pupil at Suva Grammar School from 1960 to 1964,
inclusive. My name at that time was Ann McLauchlan. My father, Alan
McLauchlan, was a teacher at the School and my sister, Alayne and brother,
Neil, were also pupils there.
We returned to NZ at the end
of 1964 so I could begin university. I attended Victoria University in
Wellington, NZ, and completed a Bachelor of Laws. I married after I
completed my degree. My husband is also a lawyer. We have three
daughters, the eldest of whom is married and has three children of her
own. I work in the State Services Commission in Wellington as a lawyer
and have been here for the last 21 years.
I
have noticed a number of names on your list of people I know or whose
older brothers or sisters are known to me. I have found this really
interesting and hope your site continues to be supported. I have sent the

I was at SGS from 1963 - 1965 (Suva
Primary in 1962). Dad worked for Shell Oil Company & we moved to Melbourne
for a year in 1966, then to Brisbane for three years then to Perth in 1970,
where I've been since then. I'm married to Helen, a Perth girl, for 25 years
now, with three kids - son 23 and daughters 20 & 15. My introduction to
swimming pools at the Suva Sea Baths (I think that was it) and over the road
from school has caused me to have a love for the water since then - I've
been playing water polo for 35 years and my kids all play. I met my wife
while coaching a women's team & have never coached a women's team since then
- too much commitment. Our club entered a team in the World Masters water
polo in San Marino / Italy last year. We didn't win any games but had a
fantastic time - most of the guys took their spouses & we did a lot of
sightseeing / eating / drinking. First game against the Hungarians was a
little bit daunting - I'm the biggest in our team at 186cm & 95 kg & was
smaller than the smallest bloke in their team. Half of them were
ex-Olympians, & none of us had played above club level. It was only
this year that I started searching the internet for info about the old
school.
Dad (Jim Marsh) worked for Shell at Walu Bay when we arrived in Fiji in 1962
aboard the Iberia, having travelled from Perth, WA. I went to school
at Suva Primary for a year (Std 2) then to Suva Grammar in a combined Std 3
& 4 class with Mr Power (I think). Std 4A in 1964 was with Miss McAdam.
She was free with the use of the ruler for punishment & I remember her ruler (with various different timber inserts) across
the back of his legs. She also had false teeth & used to wriggle them around
in her mouth on more than one occasion she nearly dropped them.
Form
1A in 1965 was with Mr Anderson a good teacher. We lived in Princes Road
Tamavua (203 I think). We left Fiji at the end of 1965 and went to Melbourne
for a year (Ashwood High School) then to Brisbane for three years (St Pauls
School, Bald Hills) then in 1970 went to Perth & did my last year of school
there (Hollywood Senior High School).
Professional History: I did Honours in Biochemistry
at Uni of Western Australia then 3 years research into heart disease. Then,
because there was no work in the industry, moved into share registry (linked
to the stock market) as a temporary measure. This continued for about 8
years & included some stock exchange classes. With the demise of the paper
based industry & move into electronic trading I did a post graduate course
in Business Computing at Curtin Uni & have been in the IT game for the last
13 years or so the first 8 was in the superannuation and funds management
area, the last 5 have mainly been with ERG, who are involved in the
provision of electronic smart cards for passengers in the transport
industry.
Family: I married Helen in 1980 and we have three children, Simon,
24, Peta 21 and Alexandra 15. Last October we chalked up 25 years of
marriage. Simon has just joined a chartered accounting firm & should finish
his commerce degree this year. He has been working full time as a manager of
the OBH (Ocean Beach Hotel) at Cottesloe, while also studying full time.
Peta is at Uni doing a business degree and is hoping to do a semester at a
uni in Ottawa in Canada at the end of this year to study and play water
polo. Alex is in year 11 at school this year and at this stage is leaning
towards doing architecture at Uni.
Recreation - I still play water
polo after some 33 years. The children do also. I like the water (mainly
because I’m not very good on land (running & cycling), so enjoy body surfing
a bit less now with the presence of big sharks around. I’ve also done the
swim to Rottnest (20km 3 times in a 4 man team and once solo). Next swim is
Feb 18 as a team.
Mum and Dad are still going strong, living in
Karrinyup. Dad had a heart attack at 48 years old and had to retire from
Shell a little while after that. He as had a few small business interests
since then but he is a keen fisherman this include crabs and crayfish as
well, and this is one of his main interests now. Mum & Dad also do a bit of
caravanning although at 76 years old they have given up the trans -
Australia trips. Sister Karen is living inland from Noosa and brother Neil
is working up north in the Kimberley in the building game.
Memories: Other useless bits of info that have stuck around we had an EK
Holden number plate E953. One of the games we used to play was number plate
spotting see who could find the highest numbered plate continuously changing
& we had to know the car & model in case someone else also saw it. Our phone
number was 3522. While we were there they had to expand the telephone
exchange and we had to add a 2 in front of our number.
I remember buying tamarind - both green and dark from the
local store, wrapped up in newspaper. Found some in Perth recently - can’t
believe I used to like so much when I was a kid. We used to go to the
Phoenix theatre every Saturday morning for the pictures and have the
inevitable TT2 and bubblegum (can’t remember the brand). Also remember the
old wooden buses & giving the RNZAF kids heaps for travelling in their
sardine can buses, although they were probably a lot more comfortable and a
lot safer. Dad had a wooden boat & we used to go to Mosquito Island and
Nukulau Island. Lots of fun - also remember on the drive home from the Suva
yacht club, we used to stop off at a bakery and watch the bread come out of
the oven. We would get a loaf or two & it was always too hot to hold - what
a challenge with the beautiful smell. Used to go fishing behind the post
office catching stonefish, eels and also some edible fish (kabatia?). Also
went fishing at the new wharf & fell in once when I was trying to look at
some fish - most embarrassing having to be dragged out by our house-girl.

I lived in Suva as a child for five years and went to
Suva Primary school with Mrs Pickering (Std 1) -I remember wetting my pants
in class because no one showed me where the toilets were. It wasn't until I
went to SGS that I learned to apply the motto; "Seek and ye shall find." Then
I was at Laucala Bay Primary School with Mrs Grey. At Suva Grammar School my
first teacher was lovely Mrs Anderson from Ovalau, then Mrs Hakaria from New
Zealand - she sent me off for the strap because Zara Bush stuck her paint
brush in my ear (where's the justice in that?). In Form 1, we had an old
American lady - Mrs Usher, the wife of the owner of Fiji Times. She was
heavily into current affairs, the Vietnam war and an awful perfume. Then in
form 2, we had the illustrious Mr Troop who loved collecting shells - one of
my hobbies. He took us out on the Renadi to Rat tail passage where I found a
rare Cyprea punctata as well as a cribraria -much to his disgust. My desk was
with; the flirtatious Shirly Wong; swimmer extraodinairre Warwick Jackson
who would always beat me in breast stroke behind Olive Pickering; and Howard
Schultz - my tin canoe buddy - one of our more memorable escapades was a
paddle to Nasese Reef to collect tiger cowries only to sink on the return
trip. Luckily we were rescued by some Fijian ladies fishing in a punt.
Two
food memories of SGS were; the yummy 'potato and pea curry rotis' from the
tuck shop and an albino guy doing a projectile vomit over my back in
assembly. In Fiji our parents took us on numerous walks into the interior of
Fiji with the Rucksack Club - visiting Waiga Gorge, Naitavoli, Namosi Gap,
travelling on bamboo rafts down the Navua and Wainibukasi Rivers and visited
Wainivudi falls to view ancient lycopodium noded grass. From Nadarivatu we
walked via Nadrou village to the Sigatoka Valley (50 miles) - loved the Moli
Kana growing wild in the forest.I was nearly washed overboard in a hurricane
on the Maroro (Queen Salotes (of Tonga) 90ft yacht). The sails ripped with
the wind and a huge wave washed across the deck - the wires under the
handrailing sieved me out of the backwash. Another time we were on the
Komowai, travelling to the Lau group and was caught by a hurricane - the
waves crashed down on the cargo deck and smashed into the bridge - the sea
was a white spray and the captain sat on nearly full power into the sea
without going anywhere. He said if the rudder broke we would capsize. For
the rest of the trip we sat on the top of the bridge, eating juicy mangoes.
We visited Marcel on Lakemba - a class mate.
Another hurricane we weathered
out in Suva Grammar swimming pool as tree limbs cracked like canons and the
rain felt like gravel pelting into us until we ducked under the water into
an eerie silence. My dad found a spiked cannon (traded that way) near Bau
village and it rested on our porch during our time in Fiji. When we left it
was donated to the Suva Museum. We survived many sessions with bamboo cannons
usually minus our eyebrows and fringes as we explained to our parents why we
were in such a charred state. Our adventures on battery hill involved falling
through ventilation shafts into darkened rooms and tunnels. The Clotworthy's
survived taking a bomb home on their hill trolley.John Beveridge and myself
would amuse ourselves by jumping out of the school rain trees with
parachutes fashioned from his bed sheets - much to his mum's annoyance. We
had a boat called Kaqaru (Kangaroo) in which we visited islands such as
Leleuvia, Ovalau, Makogai, Wakaya, Yanuca and Beqa. Apparently our boat was
bought by the Beveridges (SGS teachers) and was sold to someone else -
apparently 50yrs later it is still on the water according to Peter and
Barbara who visited us here in Mission Beach in July 2007.After leaving
Fiji, we went back to Australia to a State school with over 40 people in
each class. I hated it and often thought of stowing away on a ship to go
back to Fiji.
I now live in Mission Beach, Queensland - the closest
Australia has to the Fiji climate. I have had a varied life - two years at
University of W.A. (Was hopeless at studying). Travelled through S.E. Asia
for three months and rode a bicycle from Perth to Adelaide. Worked in the
W.A. Museum as a photographer, and as an Audio Visual Technician at Wembly
TAFE. then moved to Queensland where I worked in the Tourist industry; White
water rafting - including 5 day wilderness trips on the North Johnstone
River, 3 day sea kayak trips and multi day hikes to waterfalls in the
rainforest. I also worked on the Wairoa and Rangitaiki Rivers in New Zealand
for a year. I now work for National Parks and also do daily videos for the
tourists on the Tully River. At 52 I still occasionally work as a white
water raft guide when needed. I have survived two marriages, but am now
separated. I have five children - two from my first marriage, three from my
second. The oldest is 26, the youngest is 12.I think my adventures in Fiji
heavily influenced my thirst for adventure in my work choices. My time in the
Pacific - including a trip on the Tofua to Tonga, Nuie and Samoa, inspired
me to write a website called Polynesian Pathways at;
www.polynesian-prehistory.comThis
site brings into question many commonly held assumptions about the
colonization of the Pacific. I have also made contact with Wame Baravilala
who is a
Doctor.wbaravilala@unfpa.org.fj
Here is an extract from a letter in which he speaks of
some other class mates at SGS. Bula PeterIt is amazing to hear from you after
almost 40 odd years. Thanks for getting in touch.
Now let me just go over
some of the mob who were in our class - James Movick lives in Pohnpei,
Federated States of Micronesia, where he has a bunch of daughters and a
feisty wife who used to be the auditor general there. James is involved in
the tuna business. Shirley Wong married some rich guy in Brisbane. I have no
idea what happened to Oliver Hill. Warwick Jackson is an aircraft engineer
and lives in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Donna Davenport and Mona Beddoes
both live in New Zealand. Fred Thomas lives in Suva with his Samoan wife and
daughters. All the best to your family. Cheers, Wame. Whilst working as a river
guide on the Wairoa River Tauranga, I bumped into Christopher Brittain
(father was headmaster of an Anglican school near the Domain) in Auckland -
he is a graphic artist/printer. He was involved in a motorbike accident and
lost partial use of his right arm and so had to learn to write with his left
hand. Lesley Whitehouse is a guidance officer in Subiaco, Perth (my first
girlfriend - at 12yrs) My sister Jennifer - in the year above us was a
teacher at Busu high school in Lae PNG for 12 years. She is now a librarian
at Canberra Uni of Technology. She married Jim Croft also from SGS in her
class - he is a botanist in Canberra - was also stationed in PNG. They have
two very successful children Rowan and Ashley, who is a design engineer.

I was flicking around the WWW recently and came upon
your excellent Website for former students of Suva Grammar School from the
mid 60's to late 70's. It brought back some very old memories reading
through the former student list and fascinating to read the walks of life
that former schoolmates have taken.
I was a student of the school from 1964 (at the age of
nine) until 1971. I've been resident mostly in NZ, currently Wellington,
since leaving Fiji in 1971. I've still got a whole lot of 'Grammarian'
issues from those years which are important bits of nostalgic reading from
time to time.
My brother Robert, was two years younger than me. He
would have started SGS in 1966 and left, with my parents, in 1974. Rob
died of cancer in 1998

It is not easy to summarise 40 odd years, but
here it is.
School photo attached and recent photo
is May 2005. It's a bit scary that 40 years later I still have long hair and
a fringe. For your In Memorium section I have attached a school photo of
Laurinda Slade. I also have one at home of her brother Richard as he was
good friends with my brother and a frequent visitor to our house in Vieuto.
Personal History
My last year at Grammar was 1968. Then went to
secretarial school in Suva in 1969 interrupted by a 6 month break for a
holiday in Australia with my parents. I worked as a proof reader at the Fiji
Times for all of 1 month, then at the Bank of New South Wales for about 6
months. Met my future husband, David, who was a seaman on a visiting naval
ship from Scotland. I moved to Sydney in 1970 where I knew his ship would be
docking more often. The next 3 years I went back and forth from Sydney to
Suva, until my parents moved to Queensland in 1973. I was devastated as it
meant I had to give up my beloved horses at the Suva Pony Club.
In Sydney I worked for a mining subsidiary of CSR, and
one of my bosses was David Slade, father of Richard and Laurinda from
Grammar. I was working with him when they both tragically died. I have been
married, divorced, and engaged twice (until I came to my senses!!) - no
children thank God, but share my home with 3 Dobermanns, a Rottweiler X, and
a very nervous cat. My older brother Ray lives in Queensland on the Sunshine
Coast, and my eldest brother, Michael, has been living in New Guinea for
many years. Dad died in 1985, and Mum is in a Retirement Village on the Gold
Coast.
Currently working as Tendering Officer for Liverpool
Council in Sydney. I am Dog Welfare Officer with a Branch of the Animal
Welfare League NSW, so my spare time for the last 15 years has been devoted
to rescuing dogs from Death Row, placing them with foster carers and
ultimately re homing them with new families. A time-consuming and
heart-breaking job, but mostly ultimately very rewarding.

I have just discovered your website and would
like to register my name for it. I attended Grammar in 1972 to 1975 and
have very strong memories from that time. I married Ian Jackson in ’84 (also
an ex Grammarian) and our three sons have gone through, and are going
through Grammar at the moment (2 finished and 1 still there!). Ian was at
Grammar at the same time as me although he started there way back in the
‘60s when the lower classes were still with the higher classes. Ian’s dad
(Freeman Jackson) and his brothers all went to Grammar (Rayney [Ren], Gerald
& Warwick [Rick]). From my understanding our boys are the only third
generation at Grammar. Only one of my three sisters joined me there; Jean.
Jackie & Judith both went to St Joseph’s …. but we won’t hold that against
them!!!

Although not born in Fiji I arrived there with my parents, Gordon and
Elizabeth Rodger, from the UK when I was 6 months old and left after
completing Form 6. In between time I went to kindergarten at Mrs Gardiner’s,
then to Suva Primary School and finally to Suva Grammar School. Dad worked
in Fiji with the old Colonial Service and was Director of Education based in
Suva for many years. Mum used to help at the Bailey Clinic a lot and was
also Commissioner of Girl Guides for a while – I recall getting kicked out
of Brownies which must have been embarrassing for her! Donna has posted a
picture of our old government house in the Domain where we lived until we
moved to our own house in Service Street.
I had
horses at the Pony Club at Laucala Bay so would head straight there after
school most days. Many friends went to boarding school in NZ or Australia in
Form 3 and I then started sailing at the Yacht Club during most weekends. I
have fond memories of yacht races to Mosquito Island and Nukulau, swimming
training at Suva Sea Baths, and even school memories are fun though I can’t
recall if I really thought that at the time. The photo of St. Anne’s
reminded me of our annual Christmas holiday there – I had forgotten all
about it but now recall a lot, even it changing names to Tubakula Resort to
make it more appealing to tourists.
I left
Fiji in 1972 after doing Form 6 at SGS, and completed Form 7 and Bursary
exams at boarding school in Nelson in NZ. From there I went to university in
Dunedin, (NZ) and after a year of mucking around changed to Physiotherapy. I
met Philip who was doing medicine at Otago and we married in 1975 (at St
Luke’s Church in Laucala Bay which Donna has coincidentally posted a picture
of) when I was 21 and I’m now 50 something and we are still married.
I did my final year of physiotherapy in Hamilton (NZ) and then we worked
there for 2 years before moving to Adelaide (Australia)
in 1980 for Philip to finish his anaesthetic training. After a couple of
years we moved on to Oxford (UK) again with Phil’s work, so I was able to
get lots of experience working as a physio along the way.
After a year in England we came back and settled in Adelaide and have been
here ever since. I worked at Flinders Medical Centre and happened to bump
into Jay Browning in about 1983 so caught up with him and Anke and their
children before
they moved up to Queensland.
We have two sons; Michael arrived in 1984 and David arrived 16 months later,
and I haven’t worked as a physio since. I was a stay-at-home mum until 1995
when I got bored and went to uni again to do a post-graduate librarianship
course, and have worked part time (currently 3.5 days a week) in medical
libraries ever since. I vaguely recall being a library monitor at SGS and
became interested again helping in school libraries when my kids started
school!
David got a scholarship to the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport) in
Canberra just before he turned 15 in 2001 to do archery, and after 4 years
there, the highlights of which were him coming 3rd at the Open World Champs
shot in Central Park in New York in 2003, and then representing AUS in
Athens in 2004, he is now at home and at university. Bows and arrows were
temporarily replaced by shot guns and rifles and a dirt bike and catching up
on life after 4 years of nothing but archery, but he has surprised us by
recently starting training again.
Michael enjoyed being an only child for 4 years (David used to be home only
for about 6 weeks a year in total) but is coping with little brother being
around and will next year finish uni and plans to travel. The two trips he
has done trekking in Nepal
and a hiking trip with mates in NZ have whet his appetite for travel much
more than heading to France with us all to watch archery.
Phil
enjoys sailboarding and we spend a lot of time at Goolwa at the mouth of the
Murray River where we have a house. He is also into travelling (I am not –
think I did too much as a kid going backwards and forwards from Fiji to the
UK every few years) and is heading off to Antarctica for 3 weeks on a boat
later this year. As when he went on his trips to Nepal, I'm quite content to
stay at home and enjoy the peace.
My parents left Fiji in late 1979 and settled in Whangarei (NZ) so we visit
there often. They keep in touch with many ex-Fiji people and mentioned that
Colin Usher (ex-principle of SGS) died recently in NZ. I enjoy my current
job in the library of one of the teaching hospitals in Adelaide. I do
archery for fun and have proven David did not inherit his talent
from the maternal side of his parentage! Much of my spare time is taken up
being the Recorder for Archery Australia but I enjoy it immensely though
wish it was paid. We have no plans to leave Adelaide.
Phil was born in South Africa so with my background of UK and Fiji and his
of South Africa and NZ, Adelaide, where we have lived for 25+ years and both
our kids were born, is now considered to be our home.

Like most others, I’m middle aged and wherever I’ve been I still consider Fiji my emotional home. My life’s journey has presented the usual ups and downs, but now I am pleased to report I am in good health, I have found my soul mate who helps me care for and cope with a 14 year old daughter. The only way to cover three decades plus since leaving SGS would have to be in dot points:
◙ After crashing ignominiously out of form six in 1972, I was
dispatched to secretarial college in Sydney. My mother’s plan was to protect me from the clutches of an early and ill-advised marriage. It worked but, I did stumble into marriage later on.
◙ A year later I returned to Fiji to begin work - work being something a young girl did between parties and shopping. I flitted from Fiji Industries to Pearce & Co, then to Jardine Matheson and onto Pacific Harbour. Along the way I was Miss Hibiscus – a fact I have suppressed for 30 years and can only now admit to without feeling like an empty-headed bathing suit. My greatest career virtue in those days was I loved shorthand and could drive a manual typewriter and as anyone’s secretary, you could clock off at 4.30.
◙ Not long after the sudden death of my mother in 1977 I moved to Sydney - running away seemed a good option at the time. That turned into four happy years in Sydney where I was a regular at Fiji Day gatherings. I shared a flat with my brother Michael Smith and Jean Underhill and together we shared the odd bottle of tequila with a small community of single Sydney kai vitis nearby.
◙ By 1982 it felt like all my friends were getting married and getting mortgages and adventure called. After a lot of prodding the atlas I bought a one way ticket to Rome and disposed of my possessions. Most of my Italian 8 months was spent in Florence – I studied Italian if only to get a job and feed myself. It was here that I had my first taste of marketing - a path I’ve pursued since then and discovered I do have a brain. However as a single blonde in Italy I soon got sick of fending off gropers and decided it was time to move on. Through the coconut wireless I learned about a forthcoming job with the Fiji Mission at the UN, which I wanted but the trouble was it didn't start until four months.
◙ Late 1982 I headed to London for a few months working holiday to fill in the gap before the UN job. Fast forward and I never got to New York (until years later) but married an Englishman I’d known for just a few months. Another good idea at the time.
◙ Tim's job took us to Johannesburg for three years and when his contract ended in 1986 so did the marriage. Mercifully we had no children and no money to fight over. I found that divorce made me quite career oriented through necessity and fortunately I’d found something I loved to do and London had plenty of choice.
◙ Within a year I was blessed with a second chance – I met my Tony Cozzi. In 1990 we were married and the following year along came Amber and when she was two we moved from central London to West Sussex.
◙ As mature parents we began to do our sums and realised that when Amber turned 12 Tony would be 65 so thought a bit of forward planning might be in order. In 1996 when Amber was nearly five we opted for the ultimate tree change and moved from rural England to rural Queensland. We settled initially on the vineyard my father had started south of Stanthorpe but three years later bought our own five acres 10kms down the road.
◙ In June 2006 it will be ten years that we’ve been in Australia, during which time I’ve run my own “country practice” in marketing. After juggling a range of clients my current sole project is
www.polocrosse.com.au/worldcup . Amber has just moved to boarding school for her final three years and Tony has now retired – they are the two great loves of my life. I have much to be thankful for in my personal and professional life and amongst the things I value most is my childhood in Fiji. I have returned a number of times.

Hi
Donna..... Amazing to hear all the things that have been happening in your
life!! Yes I do remember perfecting our handstands and somewhere I have some
photos of us doing handstands and those tricky pictures with 2 people that
look like you are bent over with your legs next to your face (hard to
describe!!) Where do I begin?? I finished my last year of school at St
Hildas in Dunedin after SGS then went on to complete a BA at Victoria
University in Wellington. It was there that I met and fell in love with
Derek Macleod (a kiwi) and we married when I was just 18 and he was 21. I
finished my degree at 19 and we shifted to Dunedin so that Derek could go to
Teachers College and in Dunedin my daughter Melissa was born in 1973. We
moved. to Nelson for a teaching position and my son Damon was born in 1976.
After that we had a career change and moved to Totaranui (Abel Tasman
National Park) where Derek was a Park Ranger and I worked the summers as
receptionist in the Park Office. It was a great place to bring up children,
by the beach and surrounded with native bush, Melissa and Damon were on
Correspondence School with me as their teacher for the years that we were
there. We bought a piece of land in Golden Bay and built a house but
unfortunately after that the marriage ended and I went to Wellington to do
my own primary teacher training and my first job was back in Nelson at
Appleby School. I had another short disastrous marriage to a Swedish man who
needed to be married for NZ residence and for the last 10years I have been
with Ricardo who is from Uruguay and we have built a special adobe
(mud-brick) house in the country near Motueka, still in the Nelson district.
I teach new-entrant children at Birchwood School. My daughter lives in
Christchurch and has 2 beautiful children, (my grandchildren) Luca and Lola.
Damon has been living in Melbourne but is home at present and soon will take
off on overseas travels. My Mum, Mavis Tennet lives close by and my Dad,
Bert Tennet is in Dunedin. Both are in their 80s. We have had 2 trips
back to dear old Fiji but mostly doing the tourist things!! I have kept in
touch with a few friends from Fiji and I must say its great to have all
these new contacts but we need to arrange a reunion very soon!!

I was born in 1948 in Suva (Nurse Morrison's
place in Toorak) and was a foundation pupil at Veiuto. It was a big move
out there from being in town - us boys down on the waterfront and the nice
bolas up on the hill by the Coconut Frond. To be historically correct,
those were before the days of nice bola. Back then it was kashine, with a
reply of kaspark.
Being out at Veiuto was pretty suburban after
our old place in town, sitting under the baka trees right on the seawall
at Naiqiqi. Now we were separated from the sea by that vast expanse of
sensitive grass. And we weren't that sure about Suva Grammar's Dr Grey
uniforms - after the low-key white shirts and khaki shorts of Boys
Grammar, the new safari jackets were too fancy. But I must admit the
yalewas looked good in their pale frocks of pink, yellow, green or blue -
helping us learn early to count our blessings in life.
We also learnt early that it wasn't a good
idea to engage in unnecessary rioting, especially if food was involved.
Back then if the weather was wet (Suva = most of the time) the girls used
to have lunch in the covered area to the east of the assembly hall, while
the boys ate to the west of the hall. The lady who was fated to be the
teacher-in-charge at lunch on a funny old day came through, took her
place on the assembly hall steps, and with hands on hips told us boys we
were making too much noise. Henceforth we were to finish our lunch in
silence.
This was a new one on us - being quiet at
lunchbreak. Boys looked at each other with raised eyebrows and quizzical
brows, until one of our shameful number had an uncontrollable urge and
cast the first missile. I big peanut butter sandwich hit the wall beside
the teacher's head and slid down the glossy cement. She stared at it in
disbelief and was at the point of turning back to bawl out the loathsome
culprit, when she was engulfed in a flying cloud of hundreds of tinned
fish curry parcels, banana bread slices, frisbied rotis and Nasese Store
longloaf cut-lunches.
I regret to recall the total absence of
chivalry as we cheered and jeered the distraught teacher's food-smeared
exit. Well, to cut to it, we were made to form a line to receive
our retribution - repeated strokes of the cane to our tender backsides. A
bank of male teachers dealt out the punishment, but a majority of Suva
Grammar's boys were judged to be guilty and by the end of the afternoon we
had not all received our official beating. Those of us who'd shrunk
towards the end of the queue had our names taken and we received our
canings the following morning. The intervening night was a long one,
spent weighing up of the painful consequences of such thrilling moments of
illicit delight - more were too come, but never again did we send our
lunches airborne.
By 1962 when I was in Mr Cater's Form 2, we
were pretty settled into the Veiuto lifestyle and had become decidedly
more civilised. Three of my classmates and I used to take lunchbreaks in
a thick patch of guava trees half way up Vuya Rd on the right hand
side. There was a soapstone drain running through it and we christened
this waterway the Munowlsonrow Creek. In this sylvan setting, we kicked
up our heels by the weedy banks of our creek and told many lasulasu
stories while working our way through packs of Consulate and Ascot, along
with miniature bottles of alcohol. I recall with a sense of sweet disgust
a particular bottle of creme de menthe, which one in our number had
filched from his parent's liquor cabinet.
You might be wondering about that creek name
- it was a composite of our four names - Geoffrey Cowell, Alistair Munro,
Peter Thomson and George Marlow.
